Pike School of Art — Mississippi to Receive $25,000 Our Town Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts

McComb, Miss.— Pike School of Art — Mississippi has been approved for a $25,000 Our Town grant to support development of a cultural plan for the McComb Arts and Entertainment District in McComb, Mississippi. This is one of 63 grants nationwide that the agency has approved in this category to support projects that integrate arts, culture, and design activities into efforts that strengthen communities by advancing local economic, physical, and/or social outcomes; ultimately laying the groundwork for sustainable systems change.

“As the country and the arts sector begin to work towards a post-pandemic world, the National Endowment for the Arts is proud to announce this Our Town funding. These awards will support cross-sector partnerships such as the one led by Pike School of Art — Mississippi that demonstrate the power of the arts to help communities create a better future for themselves.” said NEA Acting Chairman Ann Eilers.

In August 2020, the McComb Board of Mayor and Selectmen unanimously approved the creation of the City of McComb Arts & Entertainment District. The next steps include moving forward with asset mapping and stakeholder input sessions with the end goal of creating a Master Cultural District Plan. ”We are excited to have recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts that this is such a deserving project,” said Pike School of Art — Mississippi’s Founder and Director Calvin Phelps.

The project will identify arts and cultural assets and engage community stakeholders to use these assets to activate the District. By bringing together a wide range of programming including workshops, dance and music performances, artist residencies, and music and heritage festivals, offered through multiple partnerships, the project will fuel revitalization of long-distressed parts of the city and restore a sense of community pride.
