Overview
Community Centered Classes are led by local artists and creatives who have expertise in a particular art form. This program uplifts and compensates community members for sharing their skills, while making the arts more accessible and rooted in the lived experiences of McComb and its surrounding areas.
Structure
Local artists are invited to design and lead a workshop focused on their area of artistic practice—such as photography, videography, theater, or other creative disciplines. The duration and format of each workshop will vary depending on the complexity of the subject matter.
Artist Leadership:
Artists like Matt Williamson (Photography), Manuel Scott (Videography), and Debbie Watkins (Theater) represent the kind of local leadership this program prioritizes. These community artists will:
Develop the curriculum for their workshop.
Determine the appropriate age range for participants.
Propose the schedule and format (one-, two-, or three-day).
Be compensated for both preparation and instruction.
Goals
- Support and uplift artists within the community.
- Provide arts education that is reflective of the community’s culture and talent.
- Offer accessible, meaningful creative experiences to people of all ages.
- Build deeper connections between artists and community members.
Implementation:
Workshops are hosted at Pike School of Art — Mississippi or other community-accessible venues. Recruitment, promotion, and registration support will be provided to ensure broad community participation.
