About the Wide Awakes

The Wide Awakes are a network of likeminds who create in the name of liberation, artist sovereignty, and the evolution of society. The Wide Awakes are a decentralized group coming together where we can in creation and collaboration. All that is needed to participate is the willingness to ask the question, open your eyes, and jump in.

A brief history

OUR WAKE UP CALL.

We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

In February, 500 delegates converged at the For Freedoms Congress in Los Angeles, our collective excitement a powerful declaration of the world we’re building together.

And then the pandemic hit.

While we were forced to slow down, we took time to process what we had learned together and to confront uncertain new realities. We heard the names – Breonna, George, too many others – and we spoke up.

We rose up.

The urgency for a new world had sounded the call.

Now, we invite you to awaken with us.

This fall presents us with imminent possibility, a chance to commit to a world of healing, listening and justice.

The first step is to participate in political processes now, to count yourself in the census, and to vote or help someone vote.

In the years to come, we aim to build a cultural identity around creative civic participation. It is easy, as we have seen, to tear things apart. The murkier, much more difficult path is to build things together.

Let’s answer the call.

Inspired by the Wide Awakes of 1860, our 2020 AWAKENING takes a cue from this band of abolitionist dreamers and widens the lens. Like them, we’re imagining radical visions into reality. We entered February’s Congress as delegates of For Freedoms and we all emerged Wide Awakes, aiming for liberation and emancipation, insisting on the future, asking big questions – playing an infinite game.
